The crew of underwater military base
Deep Star Six have been busy installing underwater missile silos for the US Navy. With their task nearing
completion, the crew are busy excavating the ocean floor ready to install the final missile platform.
However, whilst attempting to collapse a chasm on the sea bed with explosive charges, the floor caves in and opens up an even deeper rift. At first the Deep Star crew think this is just a minor problem, but when they lose contact with the excavation team after reporting a mysterious sonar contact they realise things are much more serious.
It is only after the rescue craft has a run-in with a rather unfriendly aquatic life form that they discover that the newly opened chasm contained much more than just fossilised crustations. Attempts to abandon the station prove disastrous when the missiles they were attempting to install self destruct, and the creatures start to attack the station.
Their only hope rests in being able to repair the stations decompression chamber to enable them to return to the surface, but with the air running out , the power failing and this creature trying to smash it's way in, things don't look too great for the remaining survivors.
Directed by Sean Cunningham, the man who gave us "Friday the 13th", this is a fairly enjoyable film, with some nice gore sequences even though it seemed a little like a cross between "Alien" and "20,000 leagues under the Sea". It was just a pity the film came out in the same year as 2 other similarly themed films, namely "Leviathan" and "The Abyss" which, as a consequence, didn't get as much recognition as it should have, which was a pity as I thought this was arguably the better of the 3.
